Chapter fourteen

Freya

We’re woken at some ungodly hour by the shrill sound of Ozzy’s ringtone. I don’t know what time we finally fell asleep last night, but it’s still early enough that there’s only a faint blue hue coming from behind the blinds of our bedroom.

Ozzy’s hand smacks the nightstand, blindly fumbling for his phone.

“‘Lo?” he groans out when he answers. “No, It’s fine. What’s going on, Finn?”

His eyes pop open and his jaw clenches as he listens to whatever Finn is telling him.

“Okay.” He’s silent for a beat. “Let me call Knox before you do that.” Silence again. It’s killing me not knowing what Finn is saying to him on the other end. “I’ll let you know. Appreciate the heads-up.”

Ozzy disconnects the call and we both sit up.

“Finn got word from his inside man in the Cataldi organization. They know you’re with us.” Fear ricochets through my chest as Ozzy continues. “Finn’s guy doesn’t know if they plan on making a move or not. He wasn’t able to catch the entire conversation.”

“What did he say?” I ask, anxiety clawing at my throat.

“Just that they know we’re hiding you. Finn wanted to call in some reinforcements to meet us here.”

“Do they know where we are?” I ask—terrified someone could be on their way here to finish what they started at my apartment.

“I’m not sure. Finn says, as far as he knows, we’re safe up here. The extra manpower was more of a precaution than anything else.”

“But they could go to the clubhouse,” I say, hating that even though I’m not there, I’m still bringing danger to Ozzy’s family.

“I need to call Knox. It’s time to go on lockdown.”

“We need to go back, Ozzy. We can’t stay here knowing everyone you care about could be in danger because of me.”

Ozzy looks at me, then at his phone. It’s evident how torn he is over bringing me back to a potentially dangerous-as-hell situation, but at the same time, not being at all comfortable with leaving his brothers on their own.

“Look at me, Ozzy.” He turns his head and meets my gaze. “Your family is in Shine. God forbid the Cataldis make a move without you there and someone gets hurt…or worse. I know you well enough to know if that happened, it would eat at you for the rest of your life.”

“Losing you would more than eat at me for the rest of my life, pretty girl. It nearly killed me when you left the first time, but I knew you were safe.” His hand cups my cheek and the fear shining in his eyes makes my breath catch in my throat. “If we go back to Shine, I’m scared they could take you from me for good.”

I cover his hand with mine, attempting to reassure him. “Considering how this all started, I’d say I wasn’t as safe as you thought. But we both know, with you, I am. And the safest thing for everyone now is to be with your brothers and the rest of your family.
